Challenge

Agile procedures impress with their simplicity and uncomplicated application. In practice, however, implementation is challenging. Such a change is primarily about a paradigm shift, which has far-reaching consequences for the company's organisational structure and processes. In addition, agile initiatives are often launched simultaneously at different points in the organisation and are therefore not consistently coordinated and implemented.

Solution

If you want to spread agility in the company, you have to face a variety of challenges and, for example, introduce agile practices in the development team. In addition,

  • define the right skills in middle management
  • the reallocation of tasks should be clarified
  • competences and responsibilities should be redefined
  • Goals and framework conditions should be defined (away from task management)
  • build up self-organisation vs. self-administration
  • and finally clarify unclear guidelines for annual budgeting

Implementation

In 2011, we implemented an IAM project for an international insurance company in nine months using Scrum, which had previously failed several times over three years. This was the company's first experience with an agile project approach.

Based on this positive experience, the company gave us the go-ahead to implement a digitalisation and print project (worth 21 million) with distributed teams and components using Scrum. We also overcame this hurdle and provided the Group with a complete new digitalisation and print solution within 18 months. Since 2016, the insurance company has been using Scrum or the SAFe framework as the project methodology for 70% of its projects.
